Students invited to take part in national contest about refugees

27 October 2017

UNHCR Representation in Greece in cooperation with the Youth Awareness Committee*, is pleased to announce the launching of the 21st National Student Contest about refugees for the current school year 2017-2018 with the title “We live Together”.

Primary and secondary school students throughout Greece are encouraged to participate in the annual contest, which was first launched in 1994, working individually or in groups and having the opportunity to express their opinion, thoughts and ideas creatively.

Every day, thousands of people are forced to leave their homes due to conflict, persecution and human rights violations. They become refugees, seeking safety and protection abroad. Greece also hosts refugees, who are trying to rebuild their lives here in safety. In this new beginning, they will be together with the host community.

Refugees and locals are together at school, in the neighborhood, at work, at university. They live together during all these new experiences. What does it mean for people to live together, to share thoughts and hopes, disappointments and dreams?

Students of primary education and secondary education, including refugee children attending morning reception classes (ZEP) and afternoon reception classes (DYEP), are encouraged to take part in the contest. Joint entries prepared by students of afternoon reception classes in cooperation with their peers in morning classes are most welcome.

All entries must be submitted through the school head teachers to UNHCR Offices (Michalakopoulou 91, Athens) by 31 January 2018.

Evaluation of all entries will be held by a special committee. The awarded entries will receive symbolic gifts from UNHCR. Additionally, awarded entries will be hosted at UNCHR’s and Ombudsman’s for Children’s Rights site.
